Castle
The Castle of Lonato, commonly named as Rocca, stands on the top of one of the reliefs of the morainic amphitheater which dominates, on one side, the southern part of Lake Garda and, on the other, the historic center of the town which extends up to the first lands of the Po Valley.
The fortification, built purely for military and defensive needs, is one of the most imposing in Lombardy; its irregular plan reveals a structure almost 180 meters long and an average of 45 meters wide.
There are two bodies that, at different levels, compose it: the Rocchetta in the highest part and, further down, what is called the Main Quarter.
Despite the domination of the Visconti and the Scaligeri, the entire complex, consisting of large morainic pebbles, has a Guelph type battlement, certainly the result of restorations carried out over time.
The castle is accessed from its southern side through a door and a drawbridge which can be reached along the avenues and pedestrian paths of the large park that connects the Casa del Podestà to the Rocca.
The rooms of the Casa del Capitano in the Rocchetta house the Civic Ornithological Museum whose collection derives from the collections of the ornithologist Gustavo Adolfo Carlotto (1886-1970).
