Exhibition “Alieni. La conquista dell’Italia da parte di piante e animali introdotti dall’uomo”
( 'Aliens. The conquest of Italy by plants and animals introduced by man")
Rocca di Lonato del Garda, Sala del Capitano, Brescia
From 18th February to 2nd April 2023
From 18th February to 2nd April the monumental complex of the Rocca di Lonato hosts the exhibition "Alieni. La conquista dell'Italia da parte di piante e animali introdotti dall'uomo" (Aliens. The conquest of Italy by plants and animals introduced by man), an exhibition that includes a photographic section, a section with films, introductory panels, large-scale models of insects and some animals, including some specimens from Gustavo Adolfo Carlotto's ornithological collection.
The central theme of the exhibition deals with man's passive transport of certain organisms by removing them from their place of origin and artificially placing them in an environment where they were never present and would never have arrived naturally, with the possibility of expanding without control, favoured moreover by the absence of both natural enemies and natural self-regulating mechanisms. This process has greatly increased in recent decades with the increase in trade and exchange of goods, and has been exacerbated by rising temperatures, which allow the establishment of many tropical species.
Italy is among the European nations most affected by this phenomenon and in our countryside we now encounter not only small invertebrates from distant countries, but also large species such as the nutria or the Louisiana crayfish. Today, thanks to the efforts of hundreds of technicians and researchers all over Italy, attempts are being made to take action, developing prevention methods and systems to combat these invasive species, which the exhibition aims to highlight.
With this exhibition, the Fondazione Ugo Da Como - with the patronage of the Municipality of Lonato del Garda - wants to promote a conscious valorisation of the Ornithological Museum, an extraordinarily rich collection housed in the Rocca di Lonato and consisting of the collection of the passionate ornithologist Gustavo Adolfo Carlotto (1886-1970).
The Alieni exhibition is an initiative of Oikos and Regione Lombardia, curated by Francesco Tomasinelli and Raffaella Fiore, with the scientific supervision of the Università degli Studi dell'Insubria (Department of Theoretical and Applied Sciences) and ISPRA (Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale), the support of the LIFE in the City project and the collaboration of the Rocca di Lonato and the Fondazione Ugo da Como.
